Finland is the "land of a thousand lakes" and in the cold north, so the lake surfaces freeze. If you have all your equipment on, you might fall through the ice of the lake and then have to get out of the opening yourself. Unlike in training, you don't stand up on the edge of the opening when it can't support your weight - you drag yourself horizontally further onto the ice surface.
