swedish sheep skin jacket (1789)Carried by Gustav III when he inspected on 7 March 1789 at Drottningholm the free corps of 1400 valley men that Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt secretly and hastily convened for Stockholm and Drottningholm. The Dalkarlskåren had been convened to compensate for the regular guard who had been transferred to Kristianstad because its officers were mostly nobles who were dissatisfied with the king. At the Riksdag in Stockholm in 1789, Gustav III further angered the nobility when he pushed through the Association and Security Act despite their embittered opposition. The Dalkarlskåren could therefore act as an effective marker against the noble opposition, as well as a security. These valley men wore their parish robes as uniform and were divided into two dressings according to the color of the coats: one dressing in light coats from Mora and Ovansiljan and the other dressing in dark coats from Leksand and Nedansiljan. To guarantee the loyalty of the Dalkarl corps, which was considered to be influenced by the dissatisfaction of the opposition, Gustav III held a parade and inspection at Drottningholm dressed in a valley uniform that would imitate the Dalkarlars' own costumes. Two different coats, one light and one black, were used at the respective dressings from Ovan- and Nedansiljan.
After the king's death in 1792, the valley uniform was sent to Governor Johan Magnus af Nordin in Falun. With the suit came a sword worn by Gustav III during the Battle of Svensksund and during his trip to Dalarna in 1788.
The valley uniform was previously considered to be a costume that Gustav III is said to have worn when he spoke in Mora in 1788 to recruit the valley people to the then ongoing war. However, research has shown that he wore a guard uniform on that occasion.
