france - ranska

France may seem like a straightforward name, but across Europe it is known by several different words, reflecting layers of history, language and cultural contact.

Most European languages use a variation derived from the Franks, the Germanic people who gave the country its modern name. Others preserve older or alternative roots: Gallia recalls Roman times, Ranska and Prantsusmaa come from Norse and Baltic linguistic traditions, while names like Tsarafat or Saprangeti reflect medieval and regional adaptations
