Jewel Theft

"Yesterday, 55 men, all military, were hired by one of the largest gem brokers in the world. They dressed the men in identical outfits, gave each one a randomly assigned briefcase, and sent them along 25 different routes here in Stockholm. No one knew which briefcase contained the diamonds, but they were still stolen."

―Phil Coulson to Skye and Melinda May

One of the largest gem brokers in the world hired a group of former military officers to transport a shipment of diamonds through Stockholm. As a security measure, they were all dressed with identical grey suits and red masks, and each was given a randomly assigned briefcase handcuffed to the left hand, only one of which actually contained the diamonds. The masked men had to take up to twenty-five different routes through the city.

Former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Akela Amador followed five of the men to the subway, entering the same train car as they did. Amador destroyed the lights and killed the men, cutting the hand off the one transporting the diamonds and stealing the briefcase. With these diamonds, and the ones she obtained performing similar thefts in Milan and Monte Carlo, Amador reunited a grand total of 30 million dollars in diamonds, the quantity she needed to purchase a proxy card and enter the Todorov Building in Minsk, Belarus.

Crime Scene Investigation

"I'm getting full bars, which means if I was down here and 55 guys were in scary red masks, you know what I would do? Instagram."

―Skye to Phil Coulson and Melinda May[src]

Phil Coulson decided to investigate the jewel thefts thinking that Akela Amador, his former protegée, could have been responsible, and traveled to Stockholm to investigate the crime scene.

Coulson went to the subway accompanied by Skye and Melinda May, and detailed the security system used by the gem broker, increasing security after the thefts performed in Milan and Monte Carlo, but unable to prevent the theft. Coulson already knew that the thefts were performed by a single thief, that witnesses described as committing the crime with her eyes closed.

Skye guessed that maybe she could have some form of psychic or extrasensory perception, although May said that there was no proof of precognition, telepathy or extrasensory perception. Skye hacked some Instagram accounts that contained photos of the men in red masks, and Coulson used one of them to identify Amador.

DENMARK

Viola's Trip

On November 7, 1929, HYDRA agent Viola traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark.

World War II

HYDRA Occupation

Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II, a situation seized by HYDRA to control one of the islands in the Danish Straits and the castle upon it. Johann Schmidt studied a Viking Runestone found on the island and other relics during his time in the castle.

Steve Rogers witnessed a map showing the location of HYDRA facilities in Europe while liberating the prisoners in the Austrian HYDRA Weapons Facility. For that he was tasked to destroy all those facilities with a team while MI6 focused on locating the central HYDRA Headquarters.

Rogers enlisted the help of Dum Dum Dugan, Gabe Jones, Jim Morita, James Montgomery Falsworth and Jacques Dernier, and also convinced his childhood friend Bucky Barnes to help him.

Known as the Howling Commandos, Captain America and his unit traveled to Denmark in order to destroy the HYDRA facility located there.

On April 1944, Captain America parachuted over an island in the Nazi-occupied Danish straits from a plane, fighting hordes of HYDRA soldiers since before touching the ground. While fighting those first waves he remembered a promise he did to this mother years before, and his friend Bucky Barnes' first lessons of self-defense. Captain America easily defeated the soldiers outside the facility, until he came across a soldier wearing a HYDRA Exo-Skeleton.

Within the facility, Johann Schmidt and Arnim Zola discussed the similarities between Captain America and Schmidt now that he became the Red Skull, and Schmidt started to play a record of one of Richard Wagner's operas that inspired his early theories about the truth behind Norse mythology.

The Exo-skeleton proved to be a formidable foe for Rogers, fighting it while Schmidt started speaking through the loudspeakers within the facility about considering himself more than mortal, having heard the call of the gods. Being able to resist the strikes of the Exo-skeleton but not to defeat it, Captain America received the unwitting help of a HYDRA Mini Tank, that failed a shot aimed at Rogers and hit the Exo-skeleton.

Rogers went to save the pilot of the Exo-skeleton from being crushed under the vehicle, receiving a direct shoot from the HYDRA Cannon mounted in the vehicle. This act made Schmidt tell Rogers that he was not the superior man the gods would want to hear their call, as he was mistaking overprotecting the weak with altruism.

While stunned by the shot that made him go through a wall, Captain America was contacted by Howard Stark to guide him in disabling the vehicle still attacking him. Rogers managed to enter the vehicle, finding it was remotely operated by Arnim Zola, and disabling the control box. Zola informed Schmidt that he lost control of the vehicle, confirming Schmidt's opinion that man itself should become the greatest weapon, in order to avoid being wielded by the enemy.

Captain America hijacked the controls of the vehicle, and used it to advance through the facility and attack the HYDRA soldiers within until he reach a stairway he couldn't cross with the vehicle. The timely arrival of the Howling Commandos thwarted an ambush over Captain America, and they went to join Rogers in confronting Red Skull.

Captain America launched himself to attack Red Skull, finding the image he saw was not Red Skull. It was actually a "sonogram", an image formed by sound waves, that allowed him to appear before them from another location, as he claimed his duties at HYDRA prevented him to attend Rogers personally.

Schmidt sent an electrical surge through the batteries of the room, as he had finished studying the location and the artifacts found there, including a viking Runestone. Schmidt offered Rogers a chance to survive, the ensuing explosion would destroy the facility and everyone inside, but Captain America's enhanced speed would allow him to escape. He could decide to flee alone and embrace his superiority letting the "inferiors" die, or perish with them.

Rogers prompted Dum Dum Dugan to take the Howling Commandos and escape, while Rogers would stay behind and save everyone, proving that Schmidt was mistaken. Rogers attacked the Runestone with his shield, delaying the explosion, and buying enough time to let his unit escape.

Having successfully accomplished their mission of destroying the facility, Dugan asked Rogers if the story about the Runestone being a Scandinavian artifact made any sense for him, as maybe the Strategic Scientific Reserve gave him any intel about the plans Schmidt prepared for HYDRA. Rogers answered that was their mission, to find out what Schmidt had planned and to make sure he failed.

End of the War

By April 1945, the Nazi forces were suffering defeats on almost all battlefields of Europe. Around the time of Adolf Hitler's death, the German occupation troops were retreating from Denmark with all speed. On V-E Day, some SS troops in Denmark still refused to surrender.

Kaecilius' loss

In Copenhagen, Kaecilius and his wife Adria lived a happy life, despite having to deal with the death of their son. While the two of them were walking near the Nyhavn Canal, Adria was struck by a terrible illness and eventually died in a local hospital.

Following this death Kaecilius lived a neglected life of loneliness and depression within Copenhagen. When he was one day thrown out of a local bar after a bar fight he was met by Karl Mordo, who had traveled to Copenhagen. Kaecilius soon left Copenhagen.

Flag Smashers' Political Ultimatum

After the Blip, the Global Repatriation Council set up a refugee camp in Copenhagen. In 2024, the Flag Smashers targeted that camp on their campaign.

GREENLAND

Sinking of the Valkyrie

In 1945, Steve Rogers, piloting the Valkyrie after Johann Schmidt was presumed deceased, sent a transmission informing Peggy Carter of Schmidt's apparent death and the status of the plane, headed to New York City in order to destroy it. To save countless civilian lives, Rogers decided to sink the plane in the icy waters of the Arctic. Over the next decades, the crashed plane would end up on the frozen shores near Greenland.

Howard Stark's Forged Confession

"Where's the man himself?"

"Uh... Somewhere over Greenland, scheduled to land in Teterboro at approximately 9:00 P.M. this evening."

―Roger Dooley and Edwin Jarvis

According to Edwin Jarvis, Howard Stark was flying over Greenland in order to hand himself to the Strategic Scientific Reserve in exchange for Peggy Carter's freedom. However, Jarvis forged Stark's confession and he did not return to the United States of America until a few days later.

Search of Captain America

"How come nobody spotted it before?"

"It's really not that surprising. This landscape's changing all the time."

―S.H.I.E.L.D. tech agent and Search Team Leader

A group of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Nick Fury and Phil Coulson came to Greenland to find the remains of the Valkyrie. One day, a team led by Fury discovered one of the disabled flying bombs from the Valkyrie. When Fury returned to the S.H.I.E.L.D. Base Camp in the northeast coast of Greenland, Coulson suggested the need to accelerate the search given the proximity of a glacial shift that would hamper its success.

Soon, Fury was informed that the World Security Council scheduled a call at the S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters in New York City, and meanwhile they gave an executive order to cease the expeditions over the Arctic Region, giving an explanation for that order during the scheduled call. A year later, the Valkyrie was discovered, with Captain America's frozen, but still living body inside.

NORWAY

Asgard-Jotunheim War

Battle of Tønsberg

"From around the cold and darkness came the Frost Giants, threatening to plunge the mortal world into a new ice age. But humanity would not face this threat alone."

―Odin to Thor

In 965 A.D., the Frost Giants of Jotunheim led by Laufey, arrived to Tønsberg, planning to conquer Midgard, freezing everything in their path using the Casket of Ancient Winters to plunge the world in a new glacial period. However, the army of Einherjar led by Odin, together with Eternals, defended Tønsberg and engaged in a war against the Frost Giants, forcing them to abandon Earth and retreat to their own world.[1] Around this time, the Tesseract was lost on Earth and made its way to Tønsberg, where it was kept safe for centuries by a set of Odin worshipers.

Asgardian Warrior

"Whatever was up in these trees had to be there for centuries, right?"

"At least a millennium."

―Grant Ward and Jemma Simmons

A single warrior from the Asgardian Berserker Army decided to stay behind on Earth when the rest of the army returned to Asgard. The warrior broke the weapon that gave the Berserkers their power, the so-called Berserker Staff, and traveled to a forest in Norway to hide one of the pieces inside a tree in what would become the Trillemarka National Park.

World War II

"Your HYDRA division has failed to deliver so much as a rifle in over a year. And we had learned through local intelligence you had mounted a full-scale incursion into Norway."

―Roeder to Johann Schmidt

During World War II, Norway was occupied by Third Reich. In 1942, HYDRA forces led by Johann Schmidt, organized an incursion in Norway searching for the Tesseract. Following its trail until reaching a church full of Viking warriors entombed within its walls, Schmidt interrogated the Church Keeper, who tried to make Schmidt cease his search, claiming the Tesseract was a simple myth. Schmidt, convinced of its existence as the most valuable object in Odin's Vault, located a fake replica inside one of the tombs, and threatened the Church Keeper to kill all the inhabitants of the village if he did not help him locate the real Tesseract. Schmidt then focused his attention in a sculptured mural of Yggdrasil world tree, finding a hidden box behind a Nidhogg depiction in the mural with the actual Tesseract inside. The Church Keeper warned Schmidt that he would not control the power of the Tesseract, but Schmidt simply killed him and ordered his army to destroy the village. By April 1945, the Nazi forces were suffering defeats on almost all battlefields of Europe. Around the time of Adolf Hitler's death, the commanders of German garrisons in Norway were negotiating the surrender to the Allies.

Position in Tromsø

"As soon as Loki took the doctor we moved Jane Foster. We've got an excellent observatory in Tromsø. She was asked to consult there very suddenly yesterday. Handsome fee, private plane, very remote. She'll be safe."

―Phil Coulson to Thor

In 2012, Jane Foster received a phone call offering her a job position in an astrophysics laboratory in Tromsø. Unbeknownst to her, the offer had been arranged by S.H.I.E.L.D., as a way to protect Foster from Loki, who arrived to Earth. Phil Coulson informed Thor of the action, as S.H.I.E.L.D. deduced Foster could be one of Loki's potential targets. Two days after arriving at Tromsø, Foster demanded to know why she and Darcy Lewis were assigned to the laboratory, as it seemed that none knew what was their purpose at the facility. However, Lewis watched a news broadcast about the alien invasion. The scientists at the laboratory were worried, as Foster was not supposed to watch those images, but Lewis told them their firewall and internet security protocols were not enough to prevent it. Foster realized S.H.I.E.L.D. was behind the position at Tromsø and demanded to know what was happening or she would call Coulson to know about it.

Berserker Staff

"They found this thing in 150 square kilometers of Norwegian forest."

―Grant Ward

Jakob Nystrom and Petra Larsen, leaders of a Norse Paganist hate group, discovered that one of the pieces of the Berserker Staff was located at the Trillemarka National Park, and traveled there to retrieve it. They drew a Norse rune in one of the informative panels of the park in order to distract the park rangers while they looked for the exact location. Bjorn and Neils located the symbol drawn in the panel and complained about insensitive people who damaged the park. Nystrom and Larsen located the exact point described in the legend of the Berserker Warrior, a tree surrounded by a halo of stones. Nystrom used a chainsaw to cut the tree and tore it in half, retrieving the piece of the staff from inside the trunk after all the time they spent searching for it. Larsen touched the staff and gained the strength it granted, also being overcome by rage. Nystrom advised embracing the rage she felt instead of fighting it back. Bjorn and Neils, alerted by the noise of the chainsaw, checked the location and witnessed the ancient tree they had cut. Without saying anything, Larsen tested her new strength, killing Bjorn with a single blow.

Norse Paganists Riots

"The rioting has left twenty injured, three in critical condition. Reports indicate that the group of about a dozen was led by this man and woman. And although their motive was unclear, their message was hauntingly spelled out on the streets of Oslo."

―KEJH News Reporter

Jakob Nystrom and Petra Larsen started a series of riots in Oslo sharing the strength of the Berserker Staff retrieved at the Trillemarka National Park. Nystrom, Larsen and a group of their followers destroyed many properties and left at least 20 injured, three in critical condition, proclaiming themselves to be gods in a message spelled out on the streets of Oslo.

Investigation

"Well, I'm assuming you found something on the ground in London."

"In a tree in Norway. And, unfortunately, we weren't the ones who found it."

―Elliot Randolph and Phil Coulson

Phil Coulson and his team were reassigned to investigate the event at the Trillemarka National Park. Grant Ward tried to comfort Jemma Simmons, as she had to climb upon the fallen tree in order to analyze it and was a bit afraid of heights. Ward distracted her by asking questions about the research, how and when something could have been hidden inside a tree, making Simmons climb the tree while she was explaining her theories and the methods she would use to analyze them. Coulson interrogated Neils about the two suspects that killed her partner Bjorn. He described the woman as having hate in her eyes, and she had a silver or steel stick with decorations, but couldn't describe it better as he just ran to save his life, and was deeply affected by the death of his partner. Simmons scanned the trunk of the fallen tree, determining that the spectrographic signature was alien, and sent the data to Leo Fitz, worried that it may be another piece of Chitauri technology, like the helmet they had previously encountered that carried an alien virus, but Fitz confirmed that its readings matched those of Mjølnir and determined that the object hidden inside the tree was of Asgardian origin. Simmons scanned the imprints inside the tree for a three-dimensional restoration, sending them to Fitz, who was able to holographically reconstruct the Berserker Staff and print a 3-D model. While trying to obtain more clues about the two suspects from Neils, Coulson was informed by Skye of the riots that the Norse Paganists had caused in Oslo, and showed Ward the message they wrote in the streets, that they were gods.

Norse Paganists

Jakob Nystrom and Petra Larsen triumphantly returned to the underground base of their group of Norse Paganists, with their followers shouting their names. Nystrom claimed they were the new order, and they would become gods to take back the world from the gods that took the world first. Nystrom shared the power of the Berserker Staff with his followers, letting them touch the two pieces they had already obtained in order to gain the enhanced strength it granted. The Norse Paganists continued to study texts and old maps at their disposal in order to locate the last piece of the staff.

NEXUS

"I contacted our friends at the NEXUS about that."

"NEXUS?"

"It's the world internet hub in Oslo. Every byte of data flows through there; fastest access on Earth."

―Nick Fury, Steve Rogers, and Bruce Banner

In 2015, Tony Stark went to the NEXUS Internet Hub in Oslo to find who the person was that prevented Ultron from getting nuclear codes. It was revealed that it was J.A.R.V.I.S. and Stark managed to recover him.

Freeing Elliot Randolph

Elliot Randolph was arrested for public drunkenness and destruction of property. While spending the time in the cell in Norway, Randolph was visited by Phil Coulson, Bobbi Morse, and Leo Fitz who asked for his assistance in studying an ancient Monolith which had sucked Jemma Simmons through a portal to another world. Randolph refused to help as he claimed that he would rather keep his Asgardian identity a secret from the already fearful public. Desperate to keep under the radar, Randolph was left with no choice but to reluctantly agree to help in their investigation. Randolph ripped the bars from his cell and walked out, when the guards arrived to investigate the noise, Randolph calmly blamed the damage on Coulson before walking free.

Hunt for Natasha Romanoff

"The septic tank will need a flush in a couple of weeks, but, you know, I've got a guy coming for that. You have to haul your rubbish into town. It's just a twenty-minute drive."

―Rick Mason to Natasha Romanoff

In 2016, having been forced to escape from Thaddeus Ross who was attempting to arrest her, Natasha Romanoff went into hiding in Sæbø, Norway, having taken a ferry on the Norangsfjorden Arm once Ross discovered her tracker in Albany, New York. She had been using a motorhome and amenities provided to her by Rick Mason. Mason also delivered her a briefcase that was addressed to her from Budapest, alongside paperwork pertaining to the operation she was part of in the city years prior.

Shortly afterwards, Taskmaster appeared, and had attempted to assassinate Romanoff by pushing her car off a bridge, and after a brief confrontation that ended with Romanoff falling in the river, took the briefcase, only to find it empty, as Romanooff had managed to take the Red Dust from inside it. Romanoff eventually got out of the river and decided to leave Norway to search for Yelena Belova, who had sent the Red Dust to her.

Death of Odin

"Anyway, my father is no longer in exile. So if you could tell me where he is, I can take him home."

"Gladly. He's in Norway."

―Thor and Doctor Strange

In 2017, Thor and Loki returned to Earth searching for their father. Thor received help from Doctor Strange who sent him and Loki through an Inter-Dimensional Portal to Norway. Once in Norway, Thor and Loki found Odin and sat next to him, as he talked to them, until he died and faded away.

Odin's death freed Thor and Loki's sister, Hela from her imprisonment in Hel and she appeared through a portal. After Hela destroyed Mjølnir, Thor and Loki escaped using the Bifrost Bridge.

Snap

In May 2018, half of all life in Norway disintegrated into dust. The catastrophic number of the population lost was recorded on the global records.

New Asgard

Three weeks afterwards, Tønsberg was repopulated by Valkyrie and the surviving Asgardians, along with Korg and Miek. Thor arrived to meet them and they renamed the town as New Asgard. However, Thor soon became depressed and a drunken overweight hermit who cared nothing about his people. Over the next five years, the Asgardians lived peacefully as fishermen, accepting the fact that their days of battles and glory were over. However, one day in 2023, Bruce Banner and Rocket Raccoon arrived on the Benatar in Tønsberg and met with Thor, Korg, and Miek. They informed Thor about the Time Heist and were successful in getting his help.

As a result of the Blip, Norway’s population was restored. Afterwards, Thor returned to Tønsberg and declared Valkyrie the new leader of New Asgard. The Guardians of the Galaxy arrived and waited for him in the Benatar, while he said his goodbyes and left with them.
